Day 1

Nusa Dua – Arrive in Bali and Transfer to Your Resort Hotel at Nusa Dua

Bali emanates an essence of culture and fun, which is embodied in the temples, artwork, beaches, and restaurants. Diverse flowers decorate villages and rice terraces texture emerald slopes. Long-tailed macaques run through historical temple complexes, and farmers cultivate seaweed along the shores. From the jungle-clad mountains to the white-sand coastline, the island offers insight into a fascinating past and an exciting present as your flight lands at Ngurah Rai International Airport. Your private transfer will greet you upon your arrival and escorts you south to the shores of Nusa Dua.

The town overlooks the glistening waters of the Indian Ocean as framed by palm fronds and lush ferns. Your resort-style hotel will offer pristine views of the sea that laps at the sand. Surfers set out to catch the waves, which crest beyond the reef.

The scent of roasted coffee drifts out of cafes that happily use coffee beans grown on the island. In the evening, you will venture to the Devdan Show for your introduction to Balinese culture.

The theatrical performance follows a storyline that crosses the Indonesian Archipelago with a focus on tales from Balinese, Sumatran, Borneo, and Javanese legend. The stage fills with exotic light that highlights the movement of the dancers.

Each dancer uses their hips and hand motions to detail the meaning of the tales. Acrobats flip across stage beneath neon colored trees and small temple replicas. The performers are hypnotic in their movement and the choreography will immerse you in the Tangkep, soul, of the dance.

What’s Included: airport transfer, accommodation.

Day 2

Nusa Dua – Enjoy a Full Day Trek along the Foothills of Mount Batukaru

In the morning, the aroma of freshly roasted coffee will sweep into the sea breeze. Surfers take to the waters once again beside fishermen in dugout canoes as they cast their nets over the water. Their thatched conical hats protect them from the unfettered tropical sun. After breakfast, your guide will meet you in the hotel lobby and lead you to the foothills of Mount Batukaru for a day on the lush slopes of the countryside.

The journey will lead you past villages decorated with blossoming frangipani and hyacinths. Your guide will point you into the canopy in search of elusive orchids or oleanders. Stop first at the emerald hues of the Jatiluwih rice terraces where the textured landscape ascends from the valley floor, which are embellished with sporadic soaring coconut palms.

Farmers walk barefoot through the terraces and protect their skin with the same conical hat as the fishermen you will notice in the morning. The farmers till the soil and plant the rice fields before harvest while they balance woven baskets on bamboo poles slung over their shoulders as they traverse the hills. The air in the highlands is much cooler than the beaches.

The rice fields encompass nearly 1,500 acres along the Batukaru Mountain range and have used the system of subak, an irrigation cooperative, since the 9th century. You will enjoy the view from halfway up the terraces to find a 180-degree panorama of gently sloping rice tiers that resemble a jigsaw puzzle in every direction.

What’s Included: accommodation, tour, breakfast.

Day 3

Candidasa – Visit Kastala Village and Hike across Fertile Land to Tenganan

Today you will leave behind the shores of the southern peninsula and the quiet white-sand beaches of Nusa Dua. At breakfast, you will find tropical fruits, such as rambutan and mangosteen, that color the tables in the dining room.

The aroma of pineapple will follow you east towards the town of Candidasa. You will stop in the village of Kastala to begin your trek through the tranquil countryside. Thatched rooftops slope over the wooden steps leading into the home entrances and water buffalo plow the rice fields away from the shading palm trees.

Farmers will wave and greet you with wide smiles while the scent of coconut blends with the herbaceous grass. The trees will open to sporadic views of the lush countryside before you reach Tenganan Village, one of the best-preserved examples of ancient Balinese architecture and tradition. Trees nearly grow over the main street and hide the homes. The village continues the tradition of crafting textiles unlike anywhere else in the world, as villagers use dyes on the warp and weft threads before they weave their craft.

The weaver picks away any impurities from the cotton, such as seed or husk fragments, before spinning. The weaver then dyes the cotton with traditional practices and secret homemade recipe. The special loom used to create the threads sits on the tiled floor. You will watch the weaver work with an unencumbered focus to create an ikat (dyed) textile. The final product, a gorgeous and unique textile, will embody the island in its intricacy and captivating designs.

What’s Included: accommodation, transfer, tour, breakfast.

Day 4

Ubud – Explore Balinese Traditions and Cross Ancient Temples and Caves

At breakfast, the aroma of jackfruit will offer a subtle sweetness beneath the herbaceous trees, and fragrant hyacinths blossom against the wooden beams of the hotel lobby. Your guide will meet you after the meal and lead you along a coastal road to the Bat Cave known locally as Goa Lawah.

The sacred temple was erected over a millennium ago by an Indonesian saint and thousands of bats perch in the entrance to the cave mouth. The scent of sandalwood incense drifts upwards from the shrine at the main gate. On the horizon, you will see the outline of Nusa Penida Island as it rises like a dome out of the water. Two large banyan trees will frame the main entrance as they lead you to the central courtyard.

The devout leave fruit offerings in the bale pavilions beneath the dangling bats. Nectar bats chirp against the serene atmosphere above the ancient shrines at the heart of the temple complex. Your guide will point out a Shivaite shrine, which dates back more than 2,000 years, that exhibits motifs of a mythical dragon that keeps the cosmos balanced.

You will continue to 17th-century Klungkung Royal Palace where lily pads float gracefully across the pond, and Garuda statues line the brick colonnade that leads to the main hall. The surrounding waters will provide insight into the name, “Floating Hall,” where enchanting wayang-style paintings drape across the ceilings.

What’s Included: accommodation, transfer, tour, breakfast.

Day 5

Ubud – Revel in a Half-Day River Rafting Excursion on the Ayung River

The vibrant colors of Ubud will return with the morning light, as they spread across the Art Market at the heart of town. Painters produce elaborate works that capture the vibrant hues of the landscape and the culture emboldened in images of statues and iconic characters of legend. Sculptors depict dragons and demons, Garuda and local wildlife through dramatic wooden or stone interpretations.

After an early breakfast, your guide will lead you to the banks of the Ayung River outside of Ubud. You will board the raft and begin your exciting excursion along the water where the river moves at first with quiet ease.

Then, the banks will turn to limestone cliffs adorned with dangling vines and jungle underbrush. The aroma of fresh water blends with mineral-rich soil and the river runs from the northern mountains for more than 45 miles to the Badung Strait. Waterfalls cascade down the cliffs as they thunder against the quiet river below.

The sound will echo beneath the jungle canopy and grow stronger as you move closer to the rapids. When your guide tells you to paddle, your heart will pound against your chest with exhilaration. The rapids will tumble over rocks and bounce against the edging cliffs, splashing cold mountain water onto your cheeks. Then, the raft will bob against protruding boulders and recoil against the riverbanks before it rests at the edge of the rapids.

Your heart will return to a steady pace with the excitement of the propelling rapids over for now.

What’s Included: accommodation, tour, breakfast.

Day 6

Ubud – Hike along Shores of Lake Tamblingan and Ride a Dugout Canoe

At breakfast, the aroma of coconut and dragon fruit will accompany the freshly brewed coffee that emanates from the cafes. You will leave the streets of Ubud for the trails that crisscross the Munduk Mountains. As you pass plantations that dress the landscape in cloves, vanilla, and avocado, the aroma of cinnamon will accompany the fresh mountain air. Stop at Red Coral Waterfall for a view of the trundling cascade where the rushing water splits the lush vines and dangling foliage of the jungle cliffs as it splashes down into the rippling pool below.

A light haze forms at the bottom of the falls and spills down into the tranquil creek. Rice terraces decorate the hills along your path en route to the shores of Lake Tamblingan. The lake has a surface area that encompasses more than a half square mile along the plateau of an ancient caldera. You will board a traditional dugout canoe to cross the stoic waters and dip your fingers into the lake to feel the cool mountain temperature on your skin, with the lake sitting at more than 3,280 feet above sea level

Pristine rainforest foliage encircles the lake and caldera, and the peak of an extinct volcano rises to the east. Long-tailed macaques rustle the tree branches amongst the flowering orchids. You help row the canoe across the reflective turquoise waters until you reach Naga Loka Temple, one of 15 ancient shrines that speckles the lakeshores.

What’s Included: accommodation, tour, breakfast.

Day 7

Nusa Dua – Relish a Sunrise Tour at Mount Batur and Relaxing Hot Springs

You will wake up before dawn to venture into the highlands once more, to reach the foothills of Mount Batur. The jungle canopy spreads above you and blocks the flickering stars of the lingering night sky. Mount Batur reaches a height of more than 5,600 feet above sea level and contains a reflective sapphire lake.

Flashlights guide you along the steady path that weaves as it ascends around the slopes. Villages protrude from the rainforest trees with homes made of thatched fronds and local wood and steam rise out of distant fumaroles and fissures.

Macaques linger at the top of the caldera as they perch on tree stumps and historical statues that are overtaken with vines. A thin line of sunlight stretches across the eastern horizon while the nearby peak of Mount Agung brightens from a silhouette to an abundance of lush slopes.

The scent of rich coffee will emanate from a thermos your guide brought. The mountains in the distance imitate the rock towers erected as shrines of gratitude to those who have successfully trekked up the caldera summit. Continue down into the valley to reach the rejuvenating waters of Toya Devasya Hot Springs. Their infinity-style pool looks out into the magnificent waters of Lake Batur, reaching the inner base of the bordering caldera for an unparalleled view.

What’s Included: accommodation, tour, breakfast.

Day 8

Nusa Dua – Delight in a Morning Surf Lesson and Remaining Day at Leisure

The morning surf crests against the reef around Uluwatu Beach. Between the months of November to March, the waves can reach an average of five feet per day, as they draw surfers from around Southeast Asia and the world to enjoy the picturesque island and gorgeous swells.

After a breakfast filled with the aromatics of blossoming frangipanis and juicy guava, you will make your way to Geger Beach for a private surf lesson amongst smooth waves. Farmers tend to their crops of seaweed that grow in the shallow.

Fishermen cast their nets over the water in search of a daily catch for the market. Before you reach the water, your surf instructor will teach you the basics of popping-up and crouching on the sand. Then, practice wading out into the water, catching the wave, and bursting up to your feet until you feel comfortable. Once in the water, your instructor will guide you over the smaller wakes and tell you when to paddle back towards the shore.

The water will be cool and refreshing beneath the warming tropical sunlight. You paddle with the tide and let the wave propel you forward. When your instructor tells you to pop-up, and you spring onto your board, you will find your balance on the wave that brings you back to shore. After your lesson, you continue south to Uluwatu Temple, located on the cliff at 230 feet above Uluwatu Beach. You can see the surfers taking on the waves below. The golden and sandy striations of the limestone cliff glow in the passing sun, adding to the island’s luster.

The temple was erected more than 1,000 years ago and retains an important position as one of the island’s six spiritual pillars.

What’s Included: accommodation, tour, breakfast.

Day 9

Nusa Dua – Depart for Home

The cafes open their doors to offer patrons spectacular views of the glistening white sands of Nusa Dua. Art galleries promote local and international artists that focus on the culture and landscape around the island. Silversmiths in the village of Celuk craft immaculate and captivating works through traditions passed down over generations.

The Water Priestess offers spiritual cleansing through blessing and bathing, along with insight into her ascent to the role of High Priest in a role traditionally held by older men. Surfers take to the water while rapids enthusiasts take to the river, and life amongst the scenery of Bali continues for another day. After breakfast, your private transfer will meet you at the hotel and escort you to Ngurah Rai International Airport for your flight home.

What’s Included: airport transfer, breakfast.
