Upon arrival at Luang Prabang International Airport, you will be picked up by Laos Travel's representative and transferred to your hotel. Visit the former King's Palace (National Museum) and Wat Xieng Thong, the most photographed temple in Luang Prabang. Board a private boat for the Mekong cruise to the sacred Pak Ou Caves, filled with thousands of gold-lacquered Buddha statues. Continue to Ban Muang Keo Village to see weavers and whisky distillers, then climb Mount Phousi for a gorgeous view of the town.

Leave Luang Prabang for Vang Vieng through dusty villages and winding mountain roads (approx. 7 hours), stopping in Kasi, a famous fruit-growing region. Situated on the Nam Song River and surrounded by towering limestone karsts, Vang Vieng is a great place to enjoy nature. After checking in, plan your next few days with your guide.

Visit Tham Xang (Elephant Cave), then float through Tham Hoi (Snail Cave) on inflatable tubes, with a swim opportunity at Tham Nam (Water Cave). Following a picnic lunch, trek to a Hmong village through rice paddies, then return to Vang Vieng by kayaking down the Nam Song. A short stroll to the riverbank rewards with a dramatic sunset.

Drive about an hour through scenic fields and forests to the Vang Vieng Elephant Sanctuary, learning about elephant history, behaviour and habitat. Walk through the sanctuary among free-roaming elephants, with opportunities to touch, feed, photograph and join them in the water for a bath. Travel on to Vientiane, stopping at Nam Ngum Reservoir for a fishing community boat trip and Dongmarkhai Market.

Discover the essential landmarks of Vientiane on foot — Wat Sisaket, Wat Phra Keo, Wat Si Muang, and Patuxai Monument. The tour also takes in the golden-spired Pha That Luang and the eccentric Buddha Park, built in 1958 by a yogi-priest shaman.

Fly south to Pakse, capital of Champasak Province. Drive through mountains and winding roads to the Bolaven Plateau, visiting Tad Fane Waterfalls (120m), then Tad Champi and Tad Yeung waterfalls. Visit a tea and coffee plantation and enjoy a fresh organic coffee at Jhai Coffee House. Transfer back to Pakse in the late afternoon.

Journey along the Mekong to Don Khong, stopping at Wat Phou, a spectacular pre-Angkorian UNESCO World Heritage Site over 1,000 years old. Continue to Khong Island, the biggest island in southern Laos and start of the 4,000 Islands, where the Mekong stretches over 14km wide.

Cruise the Siphandon archipelago by traditional long-tail boat, visiting Liphi Waterfalls and the thunderous Khone Pha Pheng Falls, Southeast Asia's largest waterfall by volume. Enjoy a local-style lunch before returning to Pakse by car, arriving in time for sunset.
