Upon arrival at Vientiane Airport you will be met by Laos Travel's guide and driver and transferred to your hotel. After settling in, enjoy the remainder of the day free at leisure to explore the city or visit the bustling Mekong riverside area yourselves. Vientiane has many great restaurants with Lao, Thai, French, Italian, Mexican and Chinese cuisines available; ask the guide for personal recommendations to enjoy your dinner. Overnight in Vientiane.
Discover the essential landmarks of charismatic Vientiane, reachable mostly on foot. Start at Wat Sisaket, believed to be the city's oldest surviving temple, its cloister walls covered in over 2,000 silver and ceramic Buddha images. Visit Wat Phra Keo, built to house the famed Emerald Buddha, then Wat Si Muang, the most popular temple in town. Continue to Patuxai Victory Monument, Laos' version of the Arc de Triomphe, and Pha That Luang, constructed by King Setthathirat in the 16th century. Transfer out of the city to visit an orchid farm before the spectacular drive north to Vang Vieng, set along the Nam Song River and encircled by limestone karsts. Spend the rest of the day at leisure.
Today combines all the activities Vang Vieng is famous for: kayaking on the Nam Song River and exploring limestone caves. Visit Tham Xang (Elephant Cave), named for a remarkable limestone formation on the riverbank. The nearby Tham Hoi Cave (Snail Cave) winds deep into the mountain — float through on inflatable tubes among long corridors and limestone formations. A pool of cool spring water at the mouth of Tham Nam (Water Cave) offers a great swimming opportunity. Following a picnic lunch, trek to a Hmong village through rice paddies and vegetable gardens, then return to Vang Vieng by kayaking down the Nam Song. A short stroll to the riverbank at sunset rewards with dramatic karst scenery.
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before the journey back to Vientiane. En route, stop for lunch at Nam Ngum Reservoir, one of the largest man-made lakes in Southeast Asia, with a boat trip to visit local fishing communities. Continue to Dongmarkhai Market, where insects are sold as local snacks among the stalls. Transfer to Vientiane's Wattay International Airport for your onward flight.
