An early start provides the opportunity to witness the captivating centuries-old Tak Bat alms-giving ceremony, when hundreds of saffron-clad monks file out from the old town's 35 temples before sunrise. Wander the ancient town, visiting the magnificent stupa of Wat Wisunarat, one of the most historically important temples, built in the 16th century. Continue to Wat That Luang, the traditional cremation site for Lao Royalty, then Wat Xieng Thong, a 16th century temple epitomising the elegance of Luang Prabang architecture. Pay visits to Wat Mai and the former Royal Palace (now the National Museum), before climbing Mount Phousi for a sunset view of the gilded stupa and panoramic city views.

Board a private boat for a Mekong River cruise to the famous Pak Ou Caves, locally called Tam Ting, filled with thousands of gold-lacquered Buddha statues of all sizes. During the cruise, see fishermen and local villages along the river, which represents one of the only means of transport and commerce for many in the region. Return to Luang Prabang, stopping at a craft village surrounded by rice paddies that produces traditional textiles and Lao whisky.

Spend the morning exploring one of Luang Prabang's most impressive waterfalls, Kuang Si. Trek through jungle parklands to the Kuang Si Bear Rescue Centre, established in 2003 to rescue bears from wildlife traffickers and traditional medicine traders, and help with the bears' midday scatter feed. Stroll to Kuang Si Waterfall, where a 60m cascade feeds multi-tiered turquoise pools in a lush forest setting — enjoy a refreshing dip or walk the trails to the upper section. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the tranquil park before returning to town.

The day is free at your leisure until it is time to transfer to Luang Prabang International Airport for your departure flight, where the trip concludes.
