An immersive northern Laos adventure combining Luang Prabang's temples with a remote ecolodge stay on the Mekong, hands-on rice farming, and trekking/kayaking around the rustic riverside town of Nong Khiaw.
Welcome to magical Laos! Upon arrival at Luang Prabang International Airport, you will be picked up by Laos Travel's representative and transferred to your hotel for checking in. Enjoy a welcome drink and relax or explore nearby sights at leisure. Overnight in Luang Prabang.
Witness the captivating Tak Bat alms-giving ceremony before sunrise, then wander the ancient town visiting Wat Wisunarat, Wat That Luang, and Wat Xieng Thong — one of only two temples spared by the Black Flag army in 1887. Pay visits to Wat Mai and the former Royal Palace before climbing Mount Phousi for a sunset view over the city.
Spend the morning at Kuang Si, trekking through jungle parklands to the Bear Rescue Centre to help with the midday scatter feed, then stroll to the multi-tiered turquoise pools of Kuang Si Waterfall for a refreshing dip. Enjoy a picnic lunch before returning to town to relax or explore independently.
Depart on a 2.5–3 hour boat journey up the Mekong to Kamu Lodge, a rustic ecolodge committed to low-impact tourism, set in a remote river valley of rice paddies backed by forested mountains. Stop at Pak Ou Village to visit the Tam Thing Cave, housing over 2,500 Buddha statues. Enjoy lunch at Kamu Lodge, then choose from rice planting, gold panning (Jan–Jun), traditional fishing, village visits or archery in the afternoon. Dinner is served in an open-sided fale in the rice paddy, with overnight in one of 20 safari-style tents on the Mekong banks.
Enjoy another half-day at your rural retreat, choosing the activities your group will participate in. Then board the longboat back to Luang Prabang, with free time before exploring the fascinating night market lining the main street.
Visit the Living Land Farm for a hands-on half-day farming experience, trying each step of the rice harvest. Enjoy a Lao lunch at the farm's Rice House overlooking rice terraces. Drive a 3-hour journey to Nong Khiaw, a rustic town on the Nam Ou River. Check in and relax, then in the afternoon walk over a bridge and begin the trek up Pha Daeng Peak (approx. 2 hours to the summit).
Enjoy breakfast overlooking the river as mist hangs in the valley, then head to the isolated fishing village of Muang Ngoy to trek and kayak along the Nam Ou River. Ride a traditional boat upstream for 45 minutes, observing buffaloes bathing and locals fishing. Stop at the Khmu village of Ban Sopko Nh, then trek through farmland to the limestone Tad Mok Waterfall for a picnic lunch and swim. Continue the journey by kayak, paddling through easy rapids back to Nong Khiaw.
After breakfast, enjoy the scenic ride from Nong Khiaw back to Luang Prabang, where your journey ends.
